I am the youngest granddaughter of Isabel Barksdale Hairston. She had two sisters Hazel who birthday was april 1, 1912 and Bessie Barksdale. The sisters moved to Philadelphia sometime in 1940 or earlier . During their time in Philly, they became well known for the dresses they would make and sale. Isabel became an evanglist. They were the only children of Lula John and David. My grandmother would always speak of her cousin Flossey when ever I pealed potatos. Would love to find more of The Barksdale Clan. There was a song My grandmother would sing that I now sing to all the babies. It reminds me of a native amercian chant.

Excited to find this forum while researching the Barksdale roots in my family. My Great Grandmother was Ella Barksdale (TN). I've heard so many stories about her being mulatto, maybe white or native-american and black. She was statuesque in height with fine hair so long she used an iron over the fire to straighten it, so I'm told. She could've passed for white, but she married Isham (Isom) Martin (a dark skin man) from Carthage, TN. To their union was birthed my grandmother, Wilhelmina Martin (Prince) in 1915 (Franklin, TN-Williamson Co).
I'm striving to learn more about my GGrandmother, Ella Barksdale. I am told her mother died giving birth to a set of girl twins. Not sure what state this was in, but was told that the twins were taken by a white family and raised as white. I'm trying to confirm if the twins were raised by the Perry family.
Overall, this is a site I intend on frequenting to meet and learn more about the Barksdales.

This is the history of the Barksdales. There were three brothers from africa who were slaves. The three brothers were brought to the USA to Louisianna and given the last name of the salve masters' name Barksdale. He kept one of the brothers and sold the two others. One was sold to a slave master in Tennessee. ond the other brother was sold to a slave master somewhere up north it was either Baltimore or New York. I am leaning more to New York. From these three brother's alone were born hundreds and hiundres of Barksdale all over the states. The Barksdale are very very very big. As so are the Gans out of SharonHill Pa. My wife is the greats 4x niece Her uncle is a boxing Lengend by the NAme of Joe Gans The Old Master. The first Black man to win a championship belt of any and all division's. I have come to learn both familys live in the same city. I met my wife 29 years ago. In 1990 or 91 there was a big Barksdale Family Reunion in Jackson TN. We were told of this amazing story of our four fathers it was quite a story. Come Join us on my wifes Facebook page Champagne Thomas and see all of our family together right from Sharonhiill Pa. Just about every Gans you see were either born in Sharonhill. PA or Chester, Yadon, Pa all over the place as well as the BArksdales. Wow we were both so blessed with big big familys the Gans and the Bardsdale wow just amazing. We need all the info and how much each family needs to put in. My father\'s name was Robert James Barksdale (deceases 1976) oirginaly from Clinton, South Carolina. He had three sisters that I know of ( Virginia Barksdale -Carley , Catherine Barksdale -McPharton ) that lived in New York in the Brooklyn area and Justine Barksdale- Dean. Hello, my name is Rev. Dr. Wayne M. Weathers. I was reading these stories and wanted to say that I am apart of the Barksdale family too. My mother\'s maiden name is Mary Alice Barksdale and her father who passed away in 2004 name is Clarence Barksdale. My grandfather had a twin brother named Claude Barksdale who passed away in 1994 and an older sister Mary Barksdale whose married name is Mary Davis. She passed away in 1997. My grandfather and great aunt lived in Detroit, Michigan and my great uncle lived in Sharon Hill, PA. They were all born in Halifax, Virginia. Many of my relatives live in Lynchburg, VA (Davis/Barksdale family). Some moved to Detroit, Michigan and some reside in Chester, PA. (This is where I am from) In 2001 or 2002, there was a church in South Boston, VA that honored my great-grandfather (sorry I don\'t remember his name) because of the work he did at the church. The only thing I know is he worked on the Harlem Tunnel in New York.
